what a book. The ending is excellent. People who say books can’t change your life don’t read. It reminded me of both the outsider & for some reason Orwell’s one on the Spanish civil war.

Under-the-ground I'm trying to think if I've read that but don't think I have. I've read a few of his, not a word wasted. Our Man In Havana and Travels With My Aunt were great.

For the Spanish Civil War angle have you read A Moment of War by Laurie Lee.? The third part of the trilogy, Cider With Rosie and As I Walked Out One Midsummer Morning. They were good books from what I remember.

Under-the-ground I read The Power and the Glory last year. The tension in it is gripping isn't it? He paints such striking scenes with so few words. I love those kind of 'reluctant hero' type characters and all. Where their strength of character isn't apparent at first but emerges as the book progesses.

I very rarely use the word awesome but when I read books by people like him I'm genuinely in awe of their talent. Read a few of his last year.

Harvest no I haven’t. I will though. I read the 2nd which was just ok, but as I walked out was a massive book for me at the time. I love the idea of opening the front door & not knowing what is going to happen.

he lived not far from here. If you are ever in Stroud go to his local the Woolpack, and have some Ulley beer. It’s a lovely pub with a small section on him & photos of him in there

I have wanted to pop down to Stroud since, was actually due a meet there with some blokes from another forum as the pandem hit. I had planned to walk from Slad into Stroud. He's arranged a piss up at Stroud Brewery and then going to the Albert pub, I think. Anyway - hoping that might happen late summer.

I never realised Cider with Rosie was in the trilogy! That is bugging me now what the other book I read was. I couldn’t get in with it

Under-the-ground I read them as a trilogy, in order. Then I read Homage To Catalonia by Orwell which was an error as both civil war books just merged into one.
