If the tories had their way we would still be running a welfare state along the benevolent charity board system.

Granted they did increase education spending back when the message was "Education, education, education". They'll tip a bit more into public sector and take a bit more out of the private sector than the Tories. Then the Tories do the opposite. It's a few small movements of the dial either way.

I'd rather we got away from the 5 year cycle and had a broadly acknowledged framework going forward for the next generation.

Funniest thing about this is all the people who last month saw Cummings as a man who lies like the rest of us breathe now taking every word he says as the Godspel truth because it suits their own bias. I'm not a convert. What his evidence shows is that all of them, Johnson and Cummings included, were unfit to govern.

I don't know if anyone can be arsed following what's going on but if Cummings statements are to be believed and you lost a loved one to Covid early on you should be very very angry. The whole handling of the pandemic was shambolic.

Cummings tells an extraordinary story.

He says on the morning of 12 March, the "national security people came in" and said "Trump wants us to join a bombing campaign in the Middle East tonight".

He says this "totally derailed" meetings on coronavirus and household quarantines.

He says, at the same time, "the prime minister's girlfriend was going completely crackers" over having the No 10 press office deal with stories in the press about the Downing Street dog.

Part of the building was talking about bombing Iraq, part was talking about household restrictions, and "the prime minister's girlfriend was going completely crackers about something trivial," he states.

Travis_Bickle What is astounding is the fact cherry picking that's going on. I was only listening in on and off yesterday and my takeaway was that 90% of the shit was down to systematic failures, 5% fucking chance and 5% incompetance (albeit in the 5% that really mattered). That 90% is by and large being ignored.

Question for the floor, was the testing training shennanigans mentioned?

space it's not about cherry picking. As Ashworth has just pointed out at the despatch box, the issue behind all this is simple. Either there's truth in the substantive allegations made against Hancock and Johnson or the latter allowed a dangerous fantasist to be at the heart of how we were governed. Even if the allegations were only 1% of what Cummings said, they are hugely important. Amazes me if you don't see that.
Hancock is speaking now. He's refuted the allegations. What he and his cheerleaders never mention are the disproportionately high deaths we suffered.
They're good at what they do. They're reading scripts. They're suggesting wanting the truth about what caused those deaths is 'playing politics'. They're suggesting that, in essence, nobody cares if they lied. Sadly, for the latter, I think they're right.

space the systemic failures occurred on the Tories watch. He's the PM, the buck stops with him and those who serve under him. If the system failed, it was his party's system. They had over a decade to sort it. Same as with social care, welfare, schools, law and order etc.
The pandemic was handled under him. He was in charge of the handling. You talk about rearranging words, I could be here all day saying it in different ways, but if there's a pandemic and you are the PM, you are ultimately the one who is accountable as are those you appoint. And he appointed Cummings. And Hancock. And Gove. Again, I could go on.
