A few weeks ago I decided to get rid of the mid life crisis Nissan 350Z and my daily commute - a 14yo Land rove Discovery and buy something a bit more ‘sensible’. Anyway to cut a long story short, and its pretty irrelevant anyway I treated myself to an Audi (not new but pretty much so).
Anyway i woke up early yesterday and said to Mrs H ‘lets go to Malham’. She wasnt enthused so i said how about Hawes. So off we trotted. Hawes was busy with bikers and also luckily the pay toilets door was slightly ajar so I didnt have to spend 20p to spend a penny. A walk around this charming village and a sarnie and cup of coffee later i remembered an article Jeremy Clarkson had written about the Hawes to Thwait route which was one of his favourite and also voted one of the best best in the country. So it had to be done.
Result - bloody amazing. Surprised i have never done it before. I have done the Hawes to Kettlewell route a couple of times which is also very scenic (and actually more scary especially in winter).
But the Hawes to Thwait (Buttertubs Pass) has to be in the top three routes for me. Anyone not done it I recommend it. Maybe not at peak times. Luckily in one direct I had the road to myself so those 350bhp I had available for my right foot made it a scary drive (for Mrs H lol). Coming back I got behind a camper van which actually was good as you had time to appreciate the breath taking scenery.
Will certainly be going back. Maybe not in mid winter though
