The comment above, 'trying to like' a certain artist. I think it's a thing we've all been guilty of, as if you're missing out on something if you don't like it. I stopped doing that a while ago. I'm happy to give new stuff a few goes as certain things grow on you and surroundings, age, mood etc can make a difference. I can't deny talent but if something doesn't flick my switch then it doesn't. I just cannot for the life of me get Prince at all but he's an alleged genius. Anyway, I think that's all been covered on another thread. It'd be wierd if we were all the same.

I think I like the influenced by more than the influence more in most cases when it comes to music. Ultimately, I like pop music.

All of this stuff sounds like it would be well out of that core of twenty or so albums I’d fall back on with regularity. I suspect most people have that core type thing going on.

I've been on a pretty much exclusive The Wonderstuff tip the last few days. After having bored myself with it a few years ago it now sounds fresh and vibrant again.

Me and Oddjob went to see Michael Rother at Brudenell. Was class, had the bloke from Wire doing some weird soundscape before hand, that was bit dull and challeneging.

I was just nattering to some old head before hand, buying pints and the like. 30 minutes later he's on stage with Rother and The Wire members doign a 25 minute Neu style whig out... I was having a rollie outside when a mate came and got me and said come and see this.

It was fucking ACE!!! Like watching Neu do Hallogallo. One of best gigs Ive seen. Which isnt hard cos he drags me to see some right shite... 🤣

One shite one was Damo Suziki at Wharf Chambers which was a 40 minute free form jam song with memebers of Cowtown wich Suziki just muttering and shrieking weird shit. I honestly thought they were tuning up.

Placid Mate's Dad used to do a lot with the Termite Club.
He took us to see a guy do a conceptual jazz performance called 'Cello-phane'. He played his cello that was wrapped in, you guessed it, celophane.
I have never experienced a more unlistenable pile of shite in my life.

I really believe that people of our generation who care about such things have a very special relationship with music, far deeper than other ones (I’m talking about as ‘consumers’, in the best possible meaning), because of things like youth culture and tribalism and all that energy that was around when we were kids. Subsequent generations were late for the party, previous generations really were never allowed to keep it with them through life. For whatever reason, we still keep all of this stuff very close to ourselves as a living experience. I spent a bit of time a while back trying to shake lose of it but you can’t, you’re saddled with it and so should just celebrate it. Love the fact that we could all quote letters from a 1985 copy of the NME to each other, or whatever. It’s not wallowing in empty nostalgia, it’s just who we fucking are. I love it now, I really do. We all instinctively know that Idles are shit and all the people who like Idles kind of know as well, but they just want a band like we had a band. They won’t.

fulmine I get what you mean but I had years of hearing tales from the old man about the start of 'popular music' as we know it. About hearing rock and roll and R'n'B for the first time on American Forces Network and obscure stations broadcasting from Europe. Then there was the 60s and the UK getting a 'music scene'. 'Gigs' becoming a thing and all that went with that.
He never saw singing on the same stage as people like Rod Stewart and others as a big deal because none of them were a big deal then.
In some ways not having all the bollocks that goes with music, the interviews and profiles, videos and merchandise, they were closer to the actual songs. We had a wider experience but for those from back then that never lost their love of it, they saw it all. We came in at about season 3.
I'm rambling a bit but hopefully you get the drift.

I just think that we’ve never had to leave it behind to the extent that some generations have, that we can still obsess over things and not appear too daft (although...)
