The players weren't great but there was always the hope that things might improve. A good batch of players or a decent manager might come along. Now you can have both players and a manager and still only scrape the PL top half because most importantly you are missing the sufficiently monied owner.
Off the pitch by living carefully you could get by on a meagre income and improve your life chances. We had choices and some say in our destiny, much more so than kids today.
So no it wasn't shit. We just had to endure Brian Caswell, John Pearson and a few others for a while.
