I'd be interested how people's thoughts evolve as the World Cup is played out.

It's not designed to paint people watching it in a negative light merely to record people's thoughts on the Qatar World Cup as an entity as it plays out.

I don't want to get drawn into the football side of things, so thought a thread purely for praise or gripes at the event management as a whole would work better for me. I don't intend to post in this thread as it should be for people watching some or all of the games only.

If people think it's a shitty idea say so on here and I will delete this post.

A game that is comodotised and is more a business gets the ultimate competition it deserves through money and greed. Why are people surprised?!

No booze? Dont think thats a problem and should be respectful to the host countries customs.

Sometimes they’re one and the same in my opinion. The money paid to members to vote was done so to increase the profile of Qatar and to ultmately encourage people to visit in years to come. These oil states are acutely aware that their resource is finite and they have to plan. This is part of that

That’s a whole different debate about the religous hyporicosy of “Man/Men’s” rules to control women and the masses.

Corruption aside (that is nothing new) my overwhelming reaction is that it's fucking up the season. It's normally bonus footy in the summer but it's selfish or Northern hemisphere winter leagues to expect this to endure.

So onto the human rights, appalling and indefensible. I'm playing devil's advocate here but if FIFA get to judge the Qataris by Western standards do Islamic countries get to judge us on gambling and other stuff they disagree with? FIFA is a global organisation after all.

Personally, I'd say it should be nowhere near a non footballing country that had no stadiums and a history of human rights abuse.

Then there is the issue of a legacy World Cup, they aren't really expecting to grow football in Qatar. The stadiums are almost all being demolished, participation gains are unlikely so that's another criteria thrown in the bin.

Its a shame that all the lower league games arent sold out during the world cup. Im off to York / Wrexham. Might do a couple of Guiseley games too

Went to watch Knaresborough Town yesterday (nearest team now) and making it a regular thing. Great afternoon. Noticed the women’s team have scored 50 goals in 5 matches, so will be going to support the ladies as well with that entertainment. Surely at that rate, their strikers will be in Catarrh!! As for Qatar, corruption and dubious morals have always been part of the world cup but it's the brazen-ness of this that gets me. It's like they can barely be arsed to say "but it's all about the beautiful game". In some ways this is the logical choice based on the way that football is going. I wonder how many Newcastle, Man City and PSG supporters are boycotting it?

My eldest is boycotting it with all the moral certainty of a 17 year old, youngest is like "yeah, but, you know, it's the World Cup". I'm leaning toward the eldest's stance, but, you know, Uruguay look good...

CBIT looks just like Dubai, not many Qataris there though, probably a hotel bar, they have licenses to sell booze. Qataris go to Dubai to drink where they won't get caught and chase ladyboys and brass.

It’s weird when there’s such a big push for Women’s football to hold the World Cup in a country that treats women as second class citizens. While I’m not a fan of women’s football I quite like women.
And yes, I’ve read how women in Qatar enjoy more freedoms than women in most Middle Eastern countries, but so what?
