It was suggested, probably accurately, that I'd been a bit acerbic and smart arsey with some recent reviews.
I was very mindful of that when I played this album for the first time. And the second. And for, a couple of songs, the third.
I wanted to give it a fair crack. Some of the eulogising here means there must be something in it. But, and this is just how it left me, I don't see it.
It's not unpleasant. For 1998, it was unquestionably ahead of its time in a lot of respects and there's some nice touches.
For all of that, I won't play it again. Whenever you incorporate other genres into songs, when you mix styles, you walk a really fine line. It's probably the 25 years that have passed since this was made, but the line gets crossed on the wrong side a lot on this one. Monolith probably sounded great at 3am in the listening booth after a couple of twifts. Doesn't now.
I found tunes like I Know slightly annoying. I could hear their beards in it (I know, a tad smart arse but it fits).
I'll give Dry The Rain another listen. B + A was probably my favourite. Proper drums you see. Needles In My Eyes was a good end to it.
But if the YouTube algorithm offers them up, I doubt I'll click.
