white_dragon That’s the danger. There is a burgeoning middle class in Morocco, and a spectrum of folk from miniskirts to bag over the heads. Religion is big, from the 6 times a day call to prayer to restrictions on alcohol, but at the moment it’s a relatively liberal society, especially in the cities. There are still individuals who follow the inmans slavishly in the belief that being under their control and living a pious life will make their lives better and get them a big Telly, rather than grafting. Obviously corruption is an issue, but for sure the same is true in Spain and more than ever in the UK and US. It’s a fine balance at the moment but from what I can see Morocco is doing ok. There’s been massive investment in roads and railways, the latter of which puts the UK to shame, and there is massive ongoing construction of housing and slum clearance. I’ve been here a week thus far and have seen no crime (sorry HJ). The danger is fundamentalism coming from villages or barrios that the investment doesn’t reach. We’re in Rabat at the moment and it’s fucking gorgeous.
