Unfortunately for the lad, who may well be a sterling human being, I suspect he's been thrown the position for the optics more than anything, and as a bone thrown for his previous work for the party - I think maybe they're hoping Nigel will say something racist that they can get mileage out of. If the seat was seen as remotely winnable for Labour there'd be a middle aged male WASP pushed forward as candidate.
I say all this as much for the towns demographic as for Labours issues with diversity.
