Young_Marxist_at_Tescos I don't think they lie any more or less than most of us. It's the characterisation as liars that annoys me. And then we venerate some because they were good with words. Some of the greatest orators were shits behind closed doors. Again, no different from anyone else.
If there's been a drop in standards, I can't help thinking our slightly schizophrenic relationship with them as a society has played a big part. We decry all they do, accuse them of dishonesty, prey on their every word and then wonder why more good folk don't join their ranks and demand so much from them. We hate those that seek power, but want better people to wield it.
Our local candidate for Calder Valley is worth ten of those who continually swipe at him online. He works fulltime, has a young family and yet spends most of his waking hours trying to improve the lot of people in the Valley. All of them whether they voted for him or not. I don't believe he's unique.

Travis_Bickle I have no issue with you being sympathetic to some of them and I have no doubt there are amongst them, a few who genuinely want to help improve the lives of ordinary people.

But for every one like yours in Calder Valley, there’s one like ours, who, the day after he was elected, could have been out on the picket line, talking to and supporting striking bus drivers, but was instead busy re-tweeting Rachel Reeves.

Yeah, several of the changes Labour brought in after 1997 made a real difference to my life and some of them (eg a national minimum wage) are helping my kids even today. The Tories opposed every one. I'll be voting Labour to get the Conservatives out.

Keg ignoring all the other reasons it's quite the compelling argument to never vote Tory based on what they have opposed over history. Weekends off, sick pay, paid holidays, votes for working class then women, the NHS, the welfare state, social housing, minimum wage, you name it.

My reasons for leaving are, to be honest, fuck all to do with you. Suffice to say I’ve travelled and worked abroad for various periods since my teens. It’s never been as difficult as it is since 2016.

space Maybe the private sector should get its house in order and then they might get more support and sympathy. I'm talking corporations and MSE's here, not small businesses. Without nurses and teachers society would be even more fucked than it is. The average working person would not miss bankers. Other than the fact they now control your money (you don't have any - its all cashless) and in league with establishment business have made themselves indispensible and make sure they fucking charge you for it.

The sham of 'self-employment' in service industries, zero-hours contracts and the lie that somehow they're people-friendly because a student can make their bar job fit around lectures.
Tax evasion and sweetheart deals with the revenue. I could go on.
The delicious irony of course is the way the 'captains of industry' and 'city giants' had to come begging for taxpayers to bail them out when they showed how fucking greedy and thick they are.

Pay your taxes, be humane in your dealing with others and the planet and you can have as many big watches as you want.
