I was at the Chelsea game. The week before he'd been carried off the Elland Road pitch by fans, on their shoulders, we were already down. He'd said during that week that if he had to be sold he hoped he'd be able to come back. By the end of the week it came out that he was probably going to Man Utd. On the Saturday at Chelsea and everyone fucked off with the miserable season he was given it both barrels, 'You sign for scum, you won't be back' set to the Tom Hark song. It was a toxic atmosphere. I can see Smith now, a few yards infield of that big stand, near the tunnel, turn to the Leeds fans who'd carried him off the week before and gave us the middle finger. I saw him make his debut at Liverpool, I saw him lose his head and let his team down in Valencia and I saw him play his last game that day. When all's said and done they're just mercenaries, it was more the circumstances and events with Smith that caused such hatred.
