I grew up on Glam - T Rex, Slade, Bowie. Followed Bowie through his soul period but looked for something different. Flirted with Prog, buying Genesis and Focus until thankfully punk came along. In between, this a 2 ½ minute burst of power pop, pre-punk energy. Nelson became a ‘hero’ of mine.
Met him a couple of times. First, insisted he shake my hand while I was pissed at a Skids concert. Second time while working at Pizza Express on Park Square. A Japanese lady was putting out flowers on the tables and a ‘guy’ ran in and picked up the flowers. I was about to confront him but he ran out. I asked the lady if he was called Bill and she laughed.
He came back and over a couple of coffees, we had a chat. I told him I’d met another hero the week before, Ryuichi Sakamoto (Yellow Magic Orchestra) at Sadlers Wells. He then laughed and pointed at the Japanese lady. He told me that that the flower lady was Haruomi Hosono’s (YMO) ex-wife - and now his!!
Anyway, one of my Desert Island Discs.

sunburst finish was the first album i bought when i was 14. Absolutely nothing to do with the naked lady on the cover. Nothing. Ships in the night and fair exchange are classics as is this, Great choice!

Saw them promote that album over 2 nights at Leeds Grand. Support was odd but very brave, John Cooper Clarke!!

Sorry Wakey men.. to call something “shite” lacks imagination and very rude.

I used to see Be Bop Deluxe albums in HMV and thought, wonder what they’re like. Was a bit before my time so missed them on the radio etc.

Tried to listen to them but just dont get it.

Understand why you lads do, given they were of that time and place.

Not wanting to sound rude but they remind me of Creme Brulee from League of Gentlemen. Sort of nearly made it glamish rock.

It’s the voice. And it’s a shame. Because, as someone who openly admits liking ‘rock’ music, the band make a pretty decent racket. You can hear so many influences here. Add some California drawl and this could a track from Van Halen. But they came from Wakefield. And whilst not adopting said accent was an admirable move, it does mean the song suffers a little for me.
I can imagine seeing this lot in a pub. Loud, going for it. Few pints down and you’d hit the night air with ears ringing thinking they were the dog’s.
