Placid Flaneur Leeds beats London for best local restaurant: Just checking, this is not Meanwood, right? @Odd_Job
Djpekingman In the same building as the former Outside Inn, which closed some years ago. Not on the outskirts of Horsforth as per the article. In fact you'd be pushed to find somewhere more central. The Outside Inn was possibly the most overrated burger and chips joint I ever had the misfortune to visit.,
Flaneur Djpekingman The Outside Inn Big date place for me, back in the 80s and I didn't know anything about food (still don't). The times when a calzone was exotic. "Shall we get chips with it?" I promoted myself to Salvo's(?) at Roundhay after that.
Djpekingman Flaneur I thought Salvos was (and till is) in Headingley? Their food was several classes above the Outside Inn. First ever Italian I remember eating in was the Flying Pizza on street lane, must have been around '77. Exotic or what?
Flaneur Djpekingman Apologies, yes Headingley. Flying Pizza we used for business lunches at Wharfedale. When the hi-fi press or dealers came to visit, I was effectively a taxi service.
Placid CBIT Lawnswood Arms was the birthday joint of choice when i was a lad Damm Yankee - Chapel Allerton for me
CBIT Placid What was that one at Burley behind the rugby ground on the narrowest road in Leeds that dropped you onto Burley Road ?
Flaneur Placid Wasn't there also one at Yeadon next to Harry's? There used to be a 'version' of that (named differently) at Shipley. Loved their pork stroganoff.
Djpekingman otis On the rat run up to Queenswood Drive. Leaving the car park was taking your life in your hands. Speed some used to cut up there....
Sardine-Tree Flaneur Salvo’s still going. His sons, John and Gip took over and still run it. Gip used manage a great jazz/soul/funk night called The Cooker underneath the Town & Country. Ace nights.
Flaneur Djpekingman Yeah, apologies, Guiseley, not Yeadon. I was once stopped in Shipley by an American. He asked me "'Scuse me, can you tell me the way to Gwizley". Good job he never asked about Slawit...
otis Sardine-Tree I thought they had flogged it last year. https://www.yorkshirepost.co.uk/lifestyle/food-and-drink/salvos-headingley-owners-of-legendary-leeds-italian-restaurant-to-retire-and-sell-the-business-after-nearly-50-years-4162607 I could be wrong
YoungParisian_inExile Sardine-Tree Before the Cooker his Dig! nights were on at Coconut Grove / Rickys ... great nights and music indeed
Travis_Bickle Salvo's, Wasn't this fancy when it first opened. The Damn Yankee Now trying to remember what the place on North Lane was called across from The Lounge.
