If I don't get this at least once a month I'll go crazy, proper Japanese soul food.

To think they cut the tuna up for sashimi and sushi cuts, then you can buy the head for next to nothing.

Baked on a heated earthenware plate, then you just pick at it with enough meat for 2 or 3 people.

He's says this is served in very "exclusive" Japanese restaurants. He's wrong, this is also pub food and a cheap nose to tail options.

It's funny what we "can and can't eat" culturally.

When eating crab as a nipper, my Mam always said the brain was poisonous and it should be disposed of. Where in Japan that's seen as the best bit of the crab with the most complex taste. It's not poisonous at all. Nothing wrong with the green-meat..

It's always funny when I have mates over here and I ask what they can and can't eat. The line is often drawn at things no more complex as calamari. No adventure at all. One year we had a couple visiting, who are quite, how should I say, "right on" (wokies). Met them at the airport, they wanted a drink, so we got a Japanese black tea out of the vendor machine, made by Coca-Cola, didn't like it. I knew then that this was going to be a difficult trip food wise for them. Met them again after a week at a restaurant and they told me they didn't like any raw food, but loved the fried food they'd been getting. Mrs KOTS, who'd had a beer or two at this time, makes an order. Order comes out, smells great, looks great, chunks of the best kareage (fried chicken) you've ever seen. Slice of lemon and mayo on the side. We dig in, they profess to loving it and thank the missus for hitting the nail on the head with their tastes. By now they're obviously inquisitive about the dish as they might like to order some more. Mrs KOTS lets them in on the secret, "It's whale!" Should have seen their faces. Love 'em to bits, but that punchline.. She's a keeper is Mrs KOTS! Fit too!

I'm pretty adventurous with food and I would have a go at that tuna head but eff me - it does not look too appealing, does it.

Oysters are the biz. Fine de Claire, Utah Beach and Gillardeau varieties around here. When in Amsterdam, go to the Seafood Bar on the Spui and order Irish, Atlantic; pricey but absolutely delicious. I eat them as they come, the missus puts a bit of lemon on them. Mignonette Sauce is popular down here but I never got it.
As for fish heads, a Cretan guy I knew left the big boss and opened a restaurant. One day his mate from Crete landed with Rouget secreted in an ice bag in his luggage. We ordered the lovely darlings an were eating contentedly when he comes to see how we're doing. Sees the heads removed and put to one side and asks if we're not eating them. We say no. He picks the heads up and munches his way to the next table. Palate is nurture.

I love Oysters. Love loads of seafood. My uncle used to have a market stall selling seafood. I was introduced to loads of weird and wonderful things at a young age.

Tried a bite of Whale when out at a restaurant in Tromsø. Someone with us ordered it and after loads of red wine I was offered a bite and took it. It was bloody delicious tbh. Felt a bit conflicted eating something that is probably way cleverer than me but that doesn't stop me eating things like potatoes. You'd see Whale meat in the local Eurospar in Norway. My ex's dad told me that when he was growing up they were dirt poor and Whale was pretty much the only meat they'd eat as it was so cheap. This was before Norway found oil and did the opposite of the UK by ensuring that the whole of society benefitted from their new found wealth.

Another story, when I was up to ask for Mrs KOTS hand, sat down with the old man in an izakaya (pub) and out comes the sashimi, I asked him what it was and he told me it was "Deep Impact," then it clicked. Deep Impact was a famous Japanese race horse that had been kidnapped, just like Shergarh. 😂

king_of_the_slums Hmm - I love sashimi, but struggle with the concept of anything not fish or shellfish. Chicken? Horse? Not for me. Not yet anyway. I'm currently trying to get round this latest craze of rare pork. Wasn't there a reason we don't eat uncooked pork or chicken?

I'm pretty sure I'll have to up my game in Indochina when we get there....

I believe that whale meat went out of fashion in Japan but after the war there was no food and kids needed to eat, so it became a no-brainer, kill a whale and you can feed a whole district of schools. Japanese people right up to my missus age talk about it as school dinner food. You do what you've got to do when you've been bombed out and lost most of your farm labourers. Japan now clings on to it as a show of sovereignty, i.e. don't tell us what we can or cannot eat. The whole, "don't eat whale," thing does come across as cultural imperialism. Same people think nothing about have a Big Mac. How do the Hindus feel about that?

king_of_the_slums I have an issue with all whale & dolphin killers, not just the Japanese.

It’s got nothing to do with ‘cultural imperialism’ and more to do with the fact that they’re an endangered species, it’s illegal, they are intelligent; both sapient & sentient and they get hunted and then slaughtered. It’s also possibly not good for the eater’s health due to mercury & whale oil is no longer a highly prized community (and being selfish, ambergris is).

Societies move on and should become more humane. In the UK we’ve stopped all manner of unpleasant practices involving animals and modified & improved their living conditions & slaughter techniques for the ones that we consume. It’s 2024, not 1924.

In reference to Japan, it had economically recovered from WW2 by the end of the 50’s, and was booming by the 70’s, so there’s been no food poverty excuse to eat whale for at least 50 years.
