Best album - Destroyer Alana Yorke
Best Book - The Outsider - camus - re read this on holiday in the sun and really enjoiyed it - the simplicity of it and the descriptions of heat.
Best Gig - Slim pickings gig wise really. babybird was interesting with his new karoke/live guitar band format
Best painting I saw - Expulsion. Moon and Firelight - Thomas Cole. The light is just incredible. This was at the Thyssen in Madrid.
Best trip - my sojourn around South East Kent revisiting places of my youth and seeing how the areas has been gentrified (not Dover though), swimming in the sea and walking over the cliffs
Best Film - Erin Brokovich
Best TV - did not watch a lot really but enjoyed that Alma's Not Normal if only for the lead character and her fun bags
Best Beer - Vault City Kir royale
Best Football match - beating Liverpool at Anfield for the first time in my lifetime and Forest living rent free in Slot's head ever since

Jon Can someone find the one about the bloke on a mountain bike in Wigan, please?

Cant find the post but I'll paraphrase, I was driving through Wigan at night and saw a bloke on a mountain bike tanking down a big hill at full pelt with a baby on the crossbar. It looked about 18 months old, in a romper suit (as least it looked warm) with a dummy in. The bloke had one hand on the handlebars and one steadying the baby. Baby looked like it was enjoying it. I told this to a mate from Wigan recently and he laughed for about 5 minutes because it is exactly the kind of thing you could expect to see there.

Album - Friko - Where We've Been, Where Do We Go from Here. I've not had much album action this year. But I put this on again immediately on a flight.
Film - Dune: Part 2 and The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. Leave the World Behind and Civil War get a mention for how unsettling they were.
Place - Breda - accidently during Kingsday weekend - in Holland on the lads annual lower league football trip with a dip into Antwerp was ace. We saw the second last game of the season which NAC Breda went on to get promoted and looks like they will be staying into the top tier - up the Rats! Obviously Whitby with my 5 year old on the beach with a bit of sun and some wave chasing its always a winner.
Post - I've been really enjoying the music posted by everyone. It's working really well
Book - 'Thank You...' by Sly Stone. Jesus what a life. Or that he can even remember it. 'Revolutionary Spirit' in second place for capturing Liverpool 15 years before I got there at Uni but seemingly we lived our late teens in the same streets just in separate periods. Also Paper Cuts by Ted Kessler.
Gig - Bunnymen because they were great at the Albert Hall. Never seen them before and they didn't let me down.
Beer - Sureshot direct from the brewery under the MCR Piccadilly arches every time for me. Probably some double NEIPA. If I talking end of the road in Monton is a pint of Pomona Phaedra from Taps.
TV - I haven't got to the end but the Jackal reboot is ace. Silo was Sci-Fi, but passed time on a flight. Slow Horses gets a mention for the last season but I have to say Race Across the World is always brilliant. Extremely enjoyable and no Mi5 agents brains get blown out. Which is a nice change.
Football Match - Leicester was insane but probably Chelsea with a few from here was great fun down in the big smoke. Plus we almost got a result.

Under-the-ground

Album. Born Screaming by St Vincent. Closely followed by Bill Ryder Jones. There’s been some great albums this year.
Song Broken Man St Vincent.
Book. The man who went into the west. Biography on the poet RH Thomas. An excellent book.
Tv. One Day. One of the best tv series ever I reckon. The female lead what a performance. You had to be dead not to find it moving.
Concerts. There’s been loads. But St Vincent in Bristol was something else. She’s got IT. I think she’s Bowies heir apparent.
Also joint with Jason Isbell. Well worth the wait. An absolute master.
Film. None sprinting mind
Event. My daughter’s GCSE’s results. Closely followed by the oldest sticking with Uni in Newcastle.

The above is the good stuff, Mrs UTG has had a horror of a year. So glad to see the back of 2024 really
