Continuing an occasional series in which I choose tracks from each decade of my existence - number two, The Seventies.
This was the first single I ever bought with my own money.
The first album I owned I was given at Christmas, Voulez Vous by Abba, thanks sis - though I did play it. First one with my own money, Discovery by ELO and that got some hammer. First cassette I had was a Ronco affair that was advertised heavily on TV, Rock n Roller Disco, a bizarre collection of tracks that had The Ruts & Public Image rubbing shoulders with Dollar & The Gibson Brothers. First cassette with my own money, One Step Beyond ...
I bought Masquerade by Skids - never THE Skids I realized much later - from Woolworths. I was with my Auntie, actually great Auntie, a grandma type. I imagine with her being there it must have been a birthday present or something. I can see the battle scene picture sleeve now. It had Virgin in the corner and I thought that that was some form of offensive language as they were a bit punky and were making some kind of statement rather than it being the bleeding record label.
I played it a lot and made up my own lyrics. Listening to it now it seems a bit more spiky. They had some good songs and Jobson was always worth a watch on TOTP with his high kicks and bouncy dancing.
Anyway, Masquerade, Masquerade...
