I do not believe for one second that Zelensky went to the USA to sign that agreement and then didn't because of an argument. I don't think he had any intention of signing it.

Most analysts reckon it would take years (longer than Trump's presidency) to secure and start delivering any of the minerals suspected of being in the ground in Ukraine. I reckon Zelensky was willing to sign an agreement but he wanted a commitment from the US that they would continue to guarantee Ukraine's independence. That's when the flare went up because Vance was unwilling to answer the question about what the US understood to be a diplomatic solution. There is no diplomatic solution so they stuck the boot in and Zelensky thought 'fuck this'.
To me it's clear that Trump intends to drop Ukraine. There's no money in it and, indeed, there are rumours that Trump will cancel existing shipments of arms. The minerals stuff is a red herring; Trump already has a deal with Putin for when Ukraine is dead and buried.
