I’m posting this now because I don’t get any spare time through the day on weekends.
I rediscovered the Government Commissions BBC Sessions album by Mogwai in January. It’s probably the album by them that I have played the most over the years besides Happy Songs For Happy People. A lot of the songs on the album really seemed to fit with the time of year. I’d play it in the afternoon while working from home and look out of the window at the thin January sky. There is some exquisite melancholia on there interspersed with blasts of sonic carnage. I made a massive snowman in the back yard with my daughter in early Jan and would see it gradually melt, day after day, until all that was left of it were the stones from it’s eyes and it’s carrot nose on the floor. That album was the soundtrack for those few weeks. We’re all gradually melting lads.
I was going to go with something from there then listened to 2 Rights Make 1 Wrong on Friday afternoon from 2001’s Rock Action album (named after the Stooges Drummer) and it stopped me right in my tracks. Not heard it in absolutely ages and it sounded like a breath of fresh air. Springtime is here now. We’ve made it around another lap and the Northern hemisphere is tilting toward the sun again. There are loads of things growing everywhere and the birds are making a racket like they know it. That’s what this song sounds like. Welcoming the emerging Springtime and another lap around the sun. Nine and a half minutes of life juice.
I’ve added the live version from the Special Moves Live Album here because it makes my brain feel like it’s having a jet wash.
