Songs that are so good that they take on a life of their own

I was listening to "A Song For You" by Leon Russell yesterday and thinking about those type of songs. I thought it might make a good thread and that I might learn of some songs that I haven't encountered before. This has been covered by over 200 people including Andy Williams, Ray Charles, Carpenters, Herbie Hancock, Donny Hathaway, Willie Nelson, Aretha Franklin, the Temptations and Amy Winehouse.

Like a lot of songs of this calibre, Leon said that it just sort of came to him fully formed and took just ten minutes to write. Like it already existed somewhere beforehand.

I think it's extraordinary.

Anybody got any others like this?

fuzzy First time I heard it it was Edwyn Collins singing it. My Mam played me the Sinatra version. I think Sinatra did an album of McKuen’s songs.

Jon Glen Campbell was a Master. I didn't even know until I watched that documentary on the Beach Boys last year that he was a key part of their touring band after Brian's mind went doolally.

I'm really glad that I inherited some of his albums on vinyl from my Mum's collection.

Not walking in the wind. Wild is the wind. Three versions I have heard, the jazz / soul singer one, the female jazz singer one which everyone says it’s ace. I think it’s shit and the Bowie one. Easily the best version.
Also him out of the associates. That’s a good version as well
