Our experience of New Zealand couldn’t be any different. We have the benefit of 7 weeks to cover both Islands which has given us time to get away from the over-hyped tourist attractions. The scenery is the main attraction and a lot of it does remind me of places closer to home, but the variety of stunning locations within a single, fairly small, country has amazed us. We have been a lot luckier with the weather than you which helps.
I agree about the towns, mostly scruffy and appear run down. There are places that we won’t bother with next time, such as Northland which we only did to go to Cape Reinga, but we are already planning our next visit here which could be as soon as next December.
Having a sister down here also gives us a reason to make the journey.
