I have always struggled with Mr Astbury and the Cult. Not because I don’t like the music, which is okay, but because I knew him well for a good few years and toured with Southern Death Cult as they started out and remember him singing with his slight Scouse twang from his time in Liverpool. It is slightly disarming to hear his current American drawl, which I suppose makes sense as he’s been over there for years, but it still sounds a bit affected to these ears.
For those who are interested, Ian was a big fan of Crass, Poison Girls and Rush. I can see that the Rush element has come to the fore in his musical development.
The song itself is a bit too ‘rawk’ for me, but I can see how people might like it. Personally, I can’t help but smile at the sort of bombastic rock and roll that the Cult produce, as Ian always hated it and used to take the piss out of the stadium rock bands (Rush aside), wanting to be much more like Crass. It’s a funny old world, isn’t it?
I’d never heard this track, so thanks for posting.
I wonder how his brother, Brian, is doing nowadays? He was a good drummer once upon a time.
