The 3 signings so far seem like the types who’ll be willing to stay and scrap if we go down again. Pretty much a prerequisite, given what happened last time.
I wonder what Sunderland are doing in that regard.

I like how they’re doing business so far, and they’ve still got 125m to spend. Which is more than we spent with Bielsa.

I think OAC is right, there’s some damage limitation on display, but still think they’ll splash on a CF, a 10 and an 8. Could do with another FB, but hopefully Schmidt will get a run and can play both LB and RB

I'm old fashioned and would prefer to have all round midfielders who can.play the situations they can find themselves in.

I'd like three midfield players who have the common sense to play as a unit, if two go forward the third one sits but which one will change depending on what is happening, they work out what to do based on how the game unfolds. That's what midfield players used to do.

Your last comment says it all, the game has changed now, forget about old formations, 442, a strong back 4, 3 in midfield a lone striker. Players and formations in the modern game would run rings around teams of old.

Foxy_Dread That's how the Japan midfield play, Tanaka can play like that, that's why he's been used as a DM at Leeds, but can play AM and LM and usually rotates for Japan, give and go, someone goes, someone offers an option, someone stays back.

Still think we need a Rothwell replacement, as that's what the MF lacks, a runner and set-piece taker..

Bod it's not so cut and dried is it, there is lots to take account. What application of the rules are they playing too? The long standing ones or the rules of the last 15 years which are bizarrely so different to what went before. Wrestling now allowed in the penalty area. Players given free kicks for wilfully falling to the floor at the slightest touch.

I watch football today and I am generally underwhelmed by the skill levels.

That being said, Anton Stach, might be the Tanaka replacement, if we take Mitaman's comments about "fans favourites" potentially leaving. Still think the club would cash in, as 3m to 30m is a lot of PSR money in the bank. Not that he's been linked with a move, but he's not a big bastard and got tired last year. His price must be at its peak right now.

I’d hate to see Tanaka go, even allowing for the accounting angle. It’s ok banking £27m but how much do you need to spend to replace him?
