This was released in 1998 and I bought it then, thought it was good, maybe very good, played it a fair bit for a while and then not so much. But in the mid 2000s I found myself coming back to it more and more. I'd got into this way of thinking that there are albums and artists that suit various times of the year. Cocteau Twins and Kate Bush are for winter, most of Saint Etienne is for spring (I know they have a song called that) though some are other seasons, and Beastie Boys and Wu-Tang Clan are summer for sure. Bjork's an autumn artist and the K&D Sessions is the ultimate autumn album. Not just that, but it's an autumn in the city album. I'm not going to be much good at explaining why, but it goes with headphones, walking around the centres of big cities when the weather's getting darker and chillier, travelling on busy trains etc. Or late at night looking at the city lights from your window.
What it's not so much, I reckon, despite its reputation, is a chill-out album. (Ok, part 2 is, but I'll get to why you shouldn't bother so much with part 2 later)
Kruder and Dorfmeister remixed lots of artists from about 93 onwards and their signature sound was a jazzy drum and bass: elements of hip-hop, dub, trip-hop, yeah, but it's drum and bass that's at the heart of their best mixes. They released one very good, very drum and bassy collection of their mixes called Conversions, put out a slightly more eclectic mix in the DJ Kicks series, which is also excellent and then came up with the K&D Sessions. It's a collection of some of their remixes from the 5 or so years prior to 98, which they've then mixed together.
Some of the original tracks are a bit ropey (Bomb the Bass's Bug Powder Dust being a prime example) or noodling, but when they're remixed and then mixed together on part 1 (disc 1 on CD) there's a superb flow to them. You look at the list of the original tracks and they' re pretty eclectic but K&D make them their own in this mix. Standouts for me are Aphrodelics, Lamb and Count Basic's Speechless but it's the set that matters more.
I'm not sure what the reputation is of this album is among what people used to call headz. It was relatively quite a commercial success, which usually leads to a dissing or diminishing of reputation but I fucking love it. You know that feeling of happiness you get when you're able to wear your favourite colder weather jackets and sweaters in autumn? Well playing this in the evenings from late October onwards gives the same feeling.
As I wrote, it's a two part set. The second part is from the David Holmes track onwards and that plus Sofa Rockers and another one or two are great. But part 2 is mostly fairly generic trip-hop. Part 1 one, up to Trans Fatty Acid is where the genius is. So it's Part 1 that I'm recommending here as essential and you have no obligation to go onto to Part 2.
