This came into my world as a 9-year-old like a space rocket in 1974.
Got to number 1 and became a bona fide singalong to all of us primary school kids in Langworthy, and other areas I suspect. Such was the easy to sing melody that It even achieved the infamy of being bastardised to reach the terraces (not sure that we ever actually caught city, despite having them on the run).
Catchy as flipping fuck. And hated by many musos.

It has 2 and a 1/2 bits of depth to it though:

Firstly, the lyrics, some good stuff in there. Indeed I paraphrased it in a last message to a mate of mine who died of the Big C in April 24.

Secondly, the history.
It is adapted from a French song of the 1960s by Jacques Brel
