Walked from Cradley Heath to Wolverhampton on Saturday. Just under 15 miles. Pleasant enough walk. The Netherton tunnel at just under two miles is interesting, loads of wildlife - nesting swans, foxes and herons. A few detours as the cut is being dredged. Plus the Great Western at the end for an ale.

I saw a family doing that giant magnet thing to dredge the canal - they had found a lamp, a tyre, a barrier and 30p. The kids seemed happy enough.

This. When I had a 40 minute traipse to/from work it was great for the stress levels to process all the shite that was going on so by the time I got home the shite was usually gone.

There’s something about walking that seems to slip the gears in your mind and you switch off from all the bollocks, even if you’re walking through crappy urban grey.

Never driven to work - always been able to walk or take public transport. Don’t like driving around town at all.

Went to Edale on Saturday with the Mrs and kids. We walked up Grindsbrook clough then turned right at the top and followed the horseshoe all the way round and eventually back down to Edale. I really like this walk and have must have done it over 30 times when I lived in Manchester. First hour is hard graft, the scramble up to the top of Grindsbrook clough was a bit challenging for the kids but they did brilliantly. Then the reward is ace views and nice and steady walk all the way back round to Edale. It would normally take about 3 hours but with the kids it took about double as we took it easy and factored in loads of breaks. My daughter is only 5 so I was well proud of her. She found it a bit chilly up the top and had to borrow my coat.

Did Cat Bells on Friday. Stayed in Keswick on Thursday night. We were in a caravan right next to the river Greta on Low Briory Caravan park.
The weather report the day before had given relentless heavy bastard rain and weather warnings so woke up on Friday morning relieved to not have been washed away in the night and also hopeful that we might manage Cat bells after all. Got the 09:45 boat over Derwentwater to Hawes End. Picture here looking across the water was taken later that day but you get the general idea .
It was just light drizzle when we set off walking so cracked on with occasional breaks and chocolate incentives for the kids.
More of the same a bit higher up.
And higher still.
The scrambling bits were a bit tricky and the potential to slip and go for a burton was definitely there in the wet weather. My son loved it and was like a little mountain goat but the daughter struggled. I was well proud of her for keeping at it and making it to the top.
The rain got a bit heavier on the way down and they moaned like fuck about being tired. Managed to get back to Hawes End to catch the 1:40 boat back though. Just took it easy the next day but they both had a go at indoor climbing at the Castlerigg climbing centre and loved it. Also some obligatory titting about at the stone circle up the road.
I might be wrong but I think that the snow capped mountain in the background directly above my daughter's hand there is Helvellyn. We stayed at Glenridding last year and I fancied a go at it from that direction by myself but drank too much Warsteiner the night before and settled for a gentle walk around Ullswater instead. I'll have them scaling that before long. I love the Lake District. Closest I've seen to Scandinavian style scenery in this country.

That stone circle is fantastic, I was there in early August - the surrounding mountains are stunning, you can imagine prehistoric shenanigans going on there, nice spot for a bit of virgin sacrifice.

Fuzzy, if you're still in Keswick try the Pheasant Inn for dinner, outstanding grub.
