fuzzy Jon A visit to Sam Read's is obligatory every time we go to Grasmere. My lad normally gets a few then reads them in no time. Great selection in there like you say. Think the last one I got from there was John Niven's "O Brother" which is not the sort of thing I'd normally pick up but was glad I did. Great reporting Jon. Glad you're enjoying your holiday 👍
Jon fuzzy Amazing selection for such a small store and in such a location. Came away with a right ‘to buy list.’ Didn’t know there was a Weller book out, or a Talking Heads one. Wanted to load up on the Fell running books. I’m genuinely in awe of those lads and lasses. Over to Patterdale today after a bus ride to Ambleside to mail the camping gear to my sister’s. Proved too much to carry for my weary bones. Holed up in the Patterdale Hotel watching quiz shows. Great day today. Misty rainy morning. Soaked by the time we got to the top, combination of rain and sweat. Looked like I’d pissed my strides at one point , just as we started running into people coming in the opposite direction, naturally. Decided not to take a detour to Helvelyn on account of the fog on the tops. It’s not going anywhere. Dropped down into the valley and the sun came out. Met a couple who’d done the Coast to Coast 30 odd years ago. Still hiking together, fair play.
Djpekingman Jon Which YH were you in? Only one I've ever stayed in was up the hill going out of Grassmere in about 1979 on a Geography field trip from Park Lane College. Down the other side of the hill in the village at the bottom was an ace pub. So ace in fact we stayed n there til closing and missed the lock up. So after rogering the girl I'd pulled on the lawn we tried to get in. All locked and a massive dog making enough noise to wake the dead behind one of the doors. Eventually found a window that was unlocked so nipped in there and to bed. Lecturer gave us a bollocking the following day. Not only was I paying for the A level course (well work was), but I was around 19, 20. sWTF. I just laughed and walked off. Still got a grade A.
Djpekingman Jon must be the same one given theres only one in that area. It looks kind of familiar but it is 45 years or so since I was there so there has been some changes - theyve definitely tarted it up.
cordshoes MolOverBeethoven The Lake District and Ireland may look similar in form and ladscape, but the people who live there are different. Unfortunately
fuzzy I love Patterdale/Glenridding and that whole Ullswater area. One of my favourite places in the Lakes. Wise to not bother with Helvellyn in the fog. No point if you can't see fuck all anyway.
Jon Kicked my arse today. Angle Tarn hidden in mist. Cloud inversion at the top of Krisdy Pike made it all worth while. She’s never seen one before. Had lunch by the cairn at the top then backtracked to come down and walk along Hawswater. The descents have been battering my knee but she’s patient with the old man and that’s the hardest stages behind us.
cordshoes Jon well some. 47k steps is good stuff, especially when a lot of them are up and down and potentially dangerous. As long as no rain, which is an issue for me on slippy rocks. The only other pub recommendation I have up there is right in the tourist district, The Hole in t' Wall in Bowness on Windermere
Jon I think the difficulty and potential danger of some of the ‘paths’ is something that’s not made explicit in any guide book or videos I’ve come across. Been a while since I’ve been in a pub at 8am. First time sober. Nipper got an email reminder she’s supposed to start jury duty in Mass today. 😂
