That road safety advert brought back memories - it was filmed in Ruislip, where I grew up.

I have an instant distrust for anyone with sideburns. There's no fucking reasonable excuse for them.

used to work with a black lad called Alvin, though he was five foot eight and built like a boxer I could never ever get the image of Stardust out of my head whenever his name was mentioned, still cant now.

Oh, dearie me, this old fart's got double duty today.Like for most glam acts, I didn't give a toss about Alvin Stardust. But in the early 60s as Shane Fenton (with the Fentones) he was cool. I'M A MOODY GUY was an ace single: loads of echo and twangy guitar.I first saw Jack Bruce playing with the Graham Bond Organisation at the Orford Cellar club in Naaridge in 1965. As the line-up was organ/bass/sax/drums, Bruce played a six-string bass guitar tuned so he could effectively double as lead. He stood on the tiny stage working himself into a frenzy, swaying back and forth and headbanging years before the metallists even dreamed of it. The fact that he stood right next to Ginger Baker the drummer only upped the ante given their notorious love-hate relationship. They would drive each other on and occasionally resort to fisticuffs. He was a great blues/jazz player.

Yes, it was Alvin (real name Bernard Jewry) and he successfully took the stage name Shane Fenton. He was doing rock 'n roll revival gigs in the early 70s still as Shane Fenton until Pete Shelley of Magnet Records persuaded him to cut MY COO-CA-CHOO as Alvin Stardust and it went to number one. However, I didn't know that there had been a real Shane Fenton before him.

Was talking about this Pete Shelley ^ last night. Bloke who did Love Me, Love My Dog, as opposed to the Buzzcocks one.
