In the lull between the day the music died and the first bars of Love Me Do, for a couple of years it was Trad, Dad. It came out of the beatnik subculture and the basement clubs into the mainstream and the best of it (Acker Bilk, Kenny Ball, Chris Barber) was very good indeed.Acker Bilk turned many on to jazz for the first time.RIP.

Yep, he did the rounds--certainly wasn't typecast. But his great droopy mug particularly matched those two gruff, world weary characters. I always picture him when Sam Allardyce appears on tv.
