In Joseph Mitchell's brilliant short story "Joe Gould's Secret", his main character, who wanders around Greenwich Village with a never quite finished literary masterpiece under his arm, tells one and all that he likes to spend his time "strolling and pondering". Taking things in but strictly on his own terms and under no obligation to anyone. Not a bad recipe for creeping old age.You can find the story in Mitchell's UP IN THE OLD HOTEL. It was also made into a film some years ago.
