The vuelta has on occasion passed by our house in Murcia up in the Sierra Espuna. This year keep an eye out for stage 9, from Cartagena to Caravaca. Goes thru some cracking wee towns and villages in the Sierra Espuna. Keep an eye for the Alhama to Mula section which has some vicious climbs and drops, then onto Calaspara and Ceghin (pronounce feh-heen) before finishing in Caravaca de la Cruz (allegedly the home of a shard of the true cross). Some of the scenery up there is breathtaking and is much geener than you would expect, although there has to be a hell of a fire risk at this time of year. Hot hot hot.
Stage 7 is a big downhiller and flat stage passing thru Valencia then down the coast to Oliva. Orange groves and shark attacks are the most notable thing about that one. And hot.
Stage 8 another serious uphiller from Denia up into the interior. Narrow bendy roads and hot hot hot.
Not much of a vuelta to be fair that misses completely Andalucia, Castile la Mancha and Extremadura. Some tough driving let alone cycling to be had in the sierras of Andalucia. And super hot.
So endeth my local's guide to this years vuelta.
