This is where mountain bikes go to die

Did my first longer road ride yesterday, 82KM (just over 50 miles). No elevation to speak of and drank 4 litres of fluids, it was 32 degrees here. Any tips on how to deal with these sort of condtions/ better recovery rates would be greatly received.

Just keep eating little & often. Say every half an hour. Gels are ok, but they taste horrible. Jelly babies are good for the sugar and bananas are the best. Fish n chips at lunch?
Cuts
Hot bath, beans on toast, cup or two of tea and a decent sleep then get back out on the bike as quick as possible.

Isn't it 60g of carbs per hour? I was told to have to 2 full bottles every hour (add in SIS powder or something similar). And I had about 2 gels an hour for the first 5 hours. There were 4 feeding stations and I ate at every one. It does make a difference.SIS and Torq and the like do packs that are cheap or buy in bulk.Main thing is eat and drink. Regularly.
Cuts
While riding? I like to stop off for a sausage roll.

The combination of gels and electrolyte drinks are guaranteed to give me the shits. Flapjack, water, dried fruit and unsalted nuts are where it's at.

Just back from Puerto Pollensa in MajorcaFuck me it's lycra heaven there!!!Everyone wobbling round in their gear saying how they'd seen 'Wiggo' down the road with his family and muttering on about what sort of bike he'd been onSome great secenery out there but I just don't understand the road cycling bit - surely you'd want to get off road and see stuff you couldn't if you were in a car?!?!?
Foxy_Dread
Thing is you can be cycling through some beautiful countryside but you cannot really appreciate it until you stop. It's a bit of a dilemma for me at the moment, should the physical activity with few stops take precedent over an appreciation of the whole experience.

Did you go to Restaurant Stay Ray?

110 miles today. Started at 8, and we flew the first 50miles despite a bit of a wind. A nice egg and bacon sandwich, in a cafe with a load of other cyclists, looking out to sea near Porthcawl. The last 50 miles were a lot harder due to a few more hills and the wind seemed to have reversed and followed us back. Anyway I was fucked through Barry, but I pushed me way through to Cardiff Bay were we stopped for an ice cream. As I was getting back on my bike the front made a funny crunching noise. So I stopped and the headset is gone, all the fucking cattle grids! Luckily out of Cardiff the roads were shocking so I seemed to hit every hole in the road and had to pass over a million speed bumps. Anyway he held out. We then got on the flat coast road and hit a good pace to Newport, just as we were getting back onto the main road I started to feel all funny. So we stopped and I got a gel down my neck. So we carried on and just getting on to the ace new link road, flat as fuck & great surface, my inner tube decided to pop and come out of the tyre. It was like a gun going off! I realised the inner tube might have been too thin? Anyway luckily I had some more thin ones and after fucking about with the tyre we were good for the last 15miles., all be it a bit slower.Still the fastest 100miler I have done with 6hrs 45minutes riding time & 8hrs 30minutes with stops, with an average speed of 16mph. This is a good 2 - 3mph faster than usual. This will be the last big ride prior to the big one to Paris in 4weeks time., and the pace is well in what we need to be doing, but it's gonna be fucking very hard. Still give it me best.

110 miles? Christ on a bike indeed. Respect due.

Good work, uta.

Good stuff UTA.Haven't turned a pedal in anger all week. Got a flu-like bug at the start of the week. The usual aches and high temperature. Then by Tuesday I felt really tired and had no strength. Couldn't grip anything, legs felt knackered. Scared the shit out of me. GP gave me the once over. Just a virus but a strong one. Should get back on this week with some light sessions. Need to as I pick the road bike up from a service tomorrow. Lots of new to me bits (mate gave me some 105 ) and some Sora and Tiagra I bought. New brakes that actually fit as well!Mrs reckons I got ill because I've lost weight. I have shed a lot. Don't use scales but I can see a lot more bones and tendons and the like these days.....
