Yeah IOM, the TT will have to wait for another year. Back in a couple of week Travis will try to get out then. Not sure what happened, all happened too quick, didn't anticipate a problem so it was over before I knew it. My tyres aren't really suitable for anything needing real tread off road so was probably a bit reckless. Yeah I'm out on the bike tomorrow,

Chapeaux! That was a cracking read. 113 miles with 3000metres climbing. Good work! By the way that bike is a thing of beauty. Hope your repairs aren't too dear. I did another night ride, on Saturday, but on my own. I set off a 9 at night, with a nice steady climb, which I felt lovely going over, my mojo had come back. Then dropping down to Usk, when some monster tractors and combine harvesters bombing up the hill towards me. Luckily it was not a single track! The an undulating 7miles to Caerleon, and then into Newport, and cycling through the town dodging what looked like feral yoofs. I am now 40 after all! Then on the dual carriage way at the back of the steel works, then back onto the country lanes through a few small villages / towns then on the a48 back home. All in 42miles in 2and a half hours. A good pace for me, but it was mostly flat. Let's keep going!

Those night rides sound cracking UTA. Some of the folks from Singletrack magazine did some mountain bike rides in the middle of the night and the early hours. I might do Cragg Vale or something similar in the summer. One thing today showed is that, to state the blindingly obvious, there is no substitute for getting the miles in. Going to be a busy year, on and off the road. And that bike is fucking quick. I might not give it back.....

Good read. Gonna have to crack the 100 mile mark sooner rather than later. You lot are putting me to shame big time. 10,000 feet of climbing round here's just not happening. I think that's a good thing at this stage. Bet you'll sleep well.UTA night riding round here would be mad, especially solo but more power to you I did the 6 miles from our house when we were fixing it up last summer to the old apartment a few times at night, got funny looks off the cops and there's a couple of blocks near the old place where I slowed up mid block rather than come to a halt at the lights. They weren't warming themselves by 55 gallon drums filled with burning wood while drink from hip flasks but some dodgy looking fuckers come out at night - I am 47 after all. Factor in the drink drives, it's not happening. And the deer those bastards just march around all over the shop. And the bears up by the reservoir!

I should say. Cycling through the sticks in Monmouthshire at night would be the polar opposite of New York at night over the pond. Imagine combine harvesters & tractors bowling past times square! Not that I have ever been to New York, or America for that matter.

Hardknott? Don't know why you're concerned, this is the description from this year's Fred Whitton Sportive....Hardknott is the daddy of them all, and you’ll know as soon as you start it, since it immediately kicks up viciously when you pass the telephone box at the bottom. This first ultra steep bit climbs over a cattle grid (tricky, need to sit down as you cross it, to avoid wheel spin) and lots of riders have to get off and walk at this point. If you make it up this first killer section, then the climb relents a bit, and you get a chance to get the heart rate down below 99% max. And if you’re keen to ride the whole climb then you’d be well advised to take advantage of this respite by easing right back and recovering as much as you can because – you’ve guessed it – there’s another viciously steep bit coming up, as the road swings left at one hairpin and then right at a second painfully steep hairpin. If you’re still going at this point you’re doing extremely well and the worst is now over, but you’ll still have to dig deep to keep it moving to the very top (393m). In fact it’s often not really worth trying to ride it all – two years ago I walked this second steep bit and people still riding were barely passing me. But worse, one rider lost his balance and when he hit the deck his seat post snapped at the top, taking his saddle off with it and cruelly ending his ride. It’s certainly not worth risking injury if your gears aren’t low enough;)What gear are you running? Easy to say take a 32 or even a 34 MTB cassette but it's that steep you'd probably not have enough forward motion.Still it gets easy coming down when you've done....Be warned – the descent down Hardknott is very VERY steep with extremely tight bends, the road surface isn’t good, and it requires extreme care. Whatever you do don’t let your speed build up, or you’ll be straight off the road and down the hillside, and we don’t want to have to call out the ambulance to pick up the piecesEnjoy!

Cannondale fanboi, here. Couple of their road bikes and a 29er hardtail. Used to prefer MTB but got hacked off with it in 2012 - 1 hour ride = 2hrs cleaning the fucker, so sold both the hardtail and full suss and bought a road bike. Had a bad off, on the road, that year, too. Fucked up the medial cruciate ligaments in my right knee and have had no confidence, on the MTB, since. Bought the 29er in Nov, last year, though, as I was missing it.

Despite the mounting evidence to the contrary I still regard myself as a MTBer first and a road rider second (my Strava proves it!). Never had a serious injury on the bike and have wondered what it would do for confidence etc if I did. Had some decent falls but have led a charmed life injury-wise. Live in Calderdale so blessed with mile after mile of some of the best trails in the country. Where you based CG?Do you run a Lefty?
