I won't lie, part of my cycling is pure 'mid-life' stuff. The spin bike sessions and the feeling that I'm slipping if I don't get out (which has been a while since the bikes were in the shop and then nicked) are a bit obsessive, no doubt. But in my defence I'm 45 this year and I've got two kids, one 4 months old and I'll be fucked if I'm sitting on a fat arse when they want to run about, play football, ride bikes or just walk to the shops. And I feel better than I ever have. I've lost a shedload of weight, sleep better and have more energy at work.Whatever the health benefits, my real pleasure is getting out on the trails on my MTB. I've enjoyed the road stuff (far more than I like admitting) but I can't wait to get my new MTB. There is no better feeling than doing a few hours on good trails. A bit of everything, climbing, technical stuff, scare yourself descending and a chance to see beautiful parts of the world. You can still take a lot of it in. Riding down to Widdop Reservoir is a favourite. Pecket Well. Gorple. Lee Quarry. Could be here all night.I need to sort the front mech on the road bike I've borrowed but when I do we should get out FD.

That London Paris do you go through the tunnel? FD I think you're just looking for something to fret over. If you want to stop stop. I do.

When I have got this out of the way, I won't be doing any sporty rides again. A few weeks ago I left the garmin off the bike and just went out for the sake of it. I was great, just taking in the view, sun and scenery. I have found for this the audax stuff, is the best. All of the beaten track going through some parts of the country your not used to. Before the end of the year I will be doing a Bowie odyssey through Beckenham down to Worthing. A camping trip on the bike. And hopefully a Cheltenham to London one. This is cycling for me.Next year a trip down to Portsmouth, on the ferry. Train down to Bordeaux, and up mount ventoux, train down to Biarritz, and cycle through San Sebastián, guernica, Bilbao and ferry back to Portsmouth, then cycle home, which I reckon can all be done in a week. Everything is just out of the front door.

Yep. Was talking to some of the Saddleworth MTB mob that did it this year. Only one off and walking on Hardknott.

Well that was certainly hard. I had a crack at the 270miler 24hour from London on Saturday to Paris.I was actually shitting myself all day before the ride, but the Saturday just before the start I felt physically sick, so I was glad to get started. I was really worried about the first two stages because of the time we had, and also I had a sneaky feeling it was hilly through Kent. The middle section of the was very hilly but a steady rhythm got me through it and we made good time down to Dover, and I was about 15minutes in the time. The fastest 90miles I have done and was knocked off in under 6hours.Cycling through Dover then onto the ferry was brilliant, just as dusk was setting in. The sea was that great grey colour and the closer we got to Calais the sky got blacker and blacker. Some blokes were joking that it was going to piss down the whole way. Which as soon as we got of the ferry it did. Cycling through the night with 280 other cyclists is something I will never forget, it was magic. The 3rd stage was nice and flat'ish and got knocked off no problem. Then with stage 4 the fun started. It absolutely lashed it down until 4 in the morning, but riding through those French towns was great, then cycling as the sun was coming up was brilliant. Everyone should do this. I wasn't feeling too bad upto this point and we set off again to knock of the last hard stage. By Christ this was the hardest ride I have done. I had to stop in Amiens to take some caffeine tablets as I was falling asleep on the bike. After this lot I felt a bit better and then went out of Amiens and then the wind hit. It was a straight long line of tarmac that didn't end with the wind blowing 20mph straight into us with the wind generator wind mills blowing round like Catherine wheels! Easily the hardest 25miles I have cycled. At the end of stage 5, it was time to jack, as I had to start straight away with any chance of finishing, with another 60miles left to go! It was mayhem all around, people in tin foil with hypothermia and allsorts. The people with the big balls who carried on were pulled off the road after 10miles due to the rain and time, and most were freezing cold. Still 211miles done, which is further than I have ever gone before by 90miles. Only 6people out of 286 finished, so I don't feel too bad. I would recommend anyone to do this ride as it was that good and the best ride I have ever done. The organisation was professional standard. Brilliant.
