Here's a question for the floor......Just 3 months ago I wouldn't have thought that I would ever say this but I've got to the point in my fitness where I could ride a bike without suffering a cardiac arrest. Are there bikes you can buy maybe second hand for a hundred sterling that are good enough for a 6 mile round trip into town? I want to cycle just enough to keep myself supple but don't want to become a lycra clad leg shaver like you lot.

Easy. I'd start with a local independent cycle dealer. They'll usually have a few bikes that have been traded in.Failing that, try the 'for sale' ads. The world is full of blokes who see cyclists and fancy having a go. Then realise it's sometimes windy. Some right bargains to be had.Good luck

I bought mine from Edinburgh bicycles about 8 years ago, with the aim of getting not very far and not very quickly. The revolution range have some pretty reasonable hybrid bikes which should do the trick for a beginner (I still ride mine as I don't normally get further than 15 miles). They are not as high spec as the major brands, but no where near the price. I feel better going here than asking for advice in Halfords.

Back to Lee Quarry today for the first time in over a year. Probably my favourite trail centre because it isn't like any other. The forecast was good, but that didn't take account of the fact that the quarry above Bacup has it's own micro-climate. And the fact I'd not been there for an age meant I'd almost forgot what a twat the climb from the carpark is. A road made up of broken rocks, slick with rain that mean your tyres spin and you struggle for grip. And it's very fucking steep. Once up we were off. Quick bomb around the perimeter loop, a drop down into the body of the quarry and then we decided on the long slog up to Cragg Quarry.Cragg is a very different place. The trail goes up and down very quickly. 5-10m super steep rises and then down, means a lot of not quite making the climb and pushing, falling off etc. The mist up there was unbelievable. Visibility was shocking, felt like riding at the end of the world. But the berms and 'big dipper' turns and great when you get it right. One of the lads out with us snapped a chain that got wrapped around the bottom bracket. After we finally managed to get the cranks off (I mean who takes a crank removing tool with them?) with a classic trail bodge of three allen keys and a tyre lever, the chain was released but fucked. So he had to ride back with no chain. Still quick. He went and rode the Whistler Bike Park in Canada this year and is very quick. I love following him on the trail. Ride with people that are quicker than you, they make you better. The climb up to Cragg is a bugger which means it's fantastic going down. A man-made trail, winding but very, very quick. We did the Black run down through Lee Quarry (I wouldn't have even looked at it a few years back) and then it was back to the cars.A lot of natural trails are turning to shit already so there'll be a few more trail centres now. Planning a trip to Llandegla at Christmas.Tired but a cracking day out.

Good effort TB. The quarries are a wee bit too technical for on old bloke like me. Gisburn is about as hard as I go.

Mrs and I have talked about moving further up the valley. Have spotted some great houses when I'm out on the bike but a bit too middle of nowhere for work and the kids.

Great pics, might sprinkle some pebbles in front of the exercise bike !About same distance from Manc as Alderly Edge etc but never really caught on apart from Nevilles, some Fantastic properties for about third of the price of Cheshire but terrible rail links, not bad Mway to Manc but awful to Leeds.

If I could figure out how to post pictures - I'd show my 'new' Cannondale Jekyll. Became an empty-nester a month or so ago - and have finally got around to getting a bike and setting off in to the woods to try maim myself - loving it so far.And if I could figure out links - I'd post DisciplesOfDirt.org and the WhyPass trail system. It's not too local for most of you but it's a cracking day out. Don't know why it took me so long to get started.
