It was nearly time to leave work tonight, blowing a gale out front but we are on hill top over looking the sea so it often seems worse here. I nipped out front to see what the rainfall was like, a drop but not too bad. I decided to go for it and cycle home even though I could have left the bike nice and secure. It was the worst decision of my life that hasn't involved a woman.Cycling down the hill into a howling wind, I had to put physical effort get down a hill where I'm usually touching the brakes every now and then to slow me. After 0.75miles, i stop, think about getting blown back up the hill and getting the bus. Then i think ah fuck it, and carry on. Douglas sea front is about 2.25 miles long, perfectly flat, I had to work to quite hard to hit 7mph, it's the windiest spot on the ride so I knew after the 2.25 miles it would be a lot easier, but then it started raining, really raining.I won't go into great detail, just a couple of low points. The points where a salty stream of water was running into my eyes making it very difficult to see and it was stinging like mad, i deduced it was coming from the padding inside my helmet which i haven't washed. Cycling up or down hills where my part of the road was a stream of running water. Go outside the stream and you risk hitting some shit or an invisible hole, go inside and you are fucking off traffic which cannot pass. The other low point was the realisation that sporadically pissing myself wouldn't matter and that it would give me a nice warm sensation for a few seconds.

Just to be clear Smutty, as you were entering Douglas you were getting blown back and then a salty stream of water ran into your eyes from a dirty helmet.Takes all sorts I suppose.

They're the rides that make you stronger. Off out now. It's pissing it down. But I'll feel mint when I get back.

Well that was interesting.Found the Mmmbop trail. Very technical. Very wet. Very slippy. Fell off. A lot. Including an over the bars on the first section. Have just cleaned the bike and sat down. Now realising just how hard I fell off as my left knee, shoulder and elbow are f***ing killing me. Worth it though. The trail through the woods to Jack Bridge is brilliant. And beautiful. Like riding in The Lord of the Rings. Abandoned moss-covered stone cottages and mills in the woods, stone slab packhorse trails and roots, rocks and boulders. Had to cut the ride short as the rear brake caliper fell of my mate's Evil.Calderfornia dreamin'......

Right on the limit for me in places. The age-old mistake of grabbing on the brake when just letting it flow is the answer. Always learning though. I reckon riding it when it's p***ing it down and muddy will make it easier in the dry. Or something like that. The bloke I was out with is a really good rider, he's done Whistler etc. I try and follow his lines etc.Still sore down one side.

Three months later the bar ends were gone - 12" handlebars and the bike taped up black. Dread to think what I did back then. Getting a tow from black cabs was the easiest by grabbing the petrol cap, not so easy and damn foolish was grabbing on to the strapping down the side of wagons. All the way down Pentonville Rd the wrong way through oncoming traffic, racing the OB through Hyde Park ... very much fun days

All these fancy bike pictures and I'm yet to see a decent one of someone on a Raleigh racer on Christmas Day in a Harrington, white socks and bike clips.

Not very long. My dad put some short ones on and when I started using it for school - a bike rack. I was like Eddie Mercx's sensible younger brother.

Great though, went everywhere on that thing. Freedom.
