Dunno why I bother taking a packable waterproof on rides. I have one that packs down to, about, the size of a can of Pepsi, is allegedly breathable and weighs nowt. It was in my back pocket this afternoon when the rain started. Couldn't be arsed faffing about so rode through the, heavy-ish, shower. Soon dried out.

CharlieG Never had much joy with rain jackets. Either leak, or get you sweating like a bull, so you end up piss wet through whatever.

Young_Marxist_at_Tescos Exactly. Don't know what Gortex Shake-Dry is like but it would have to be several magnitudes better than the shite that is PakLite. Most expensive plastic bag ever. Thankfully, I never bought one.

Large ground swell for Mark Cavendish to go to the Tour. All things seem to be aligning. Bennett fucked and Cav on fire. Won a good stage today at the tour of Belgium against a strong field.

Just need his team to put him on a decent contract and it will happen.

Seriously considering a CX/gravel bike. Fact is, whilst I was never that 'gnarly' compared to many, I just don't do as much of the fast, downhill MTB riding I used to. Running kind of took over in lockdown but I miss being on a bike out in the green stuff. My fucked achilles has meant running's been on hold for a while. I was thinking about getting a fully-rigid hardtail MTB but I'll still want to do a fair bit of road riding.

CharlieG Just got a new Kinesis with very wide tyres on. Not by any means a gravel bike, but pretty chunky. Will do nicely for winter

Had a little ride out today. Nice rainy afternoon to ease back in. I am badly out of shape, 230lbs, 11 miles and typing this up in the bath, with a stitch. There’s nowhere round here I feel really safe riding with all the massive SUVs on the road and what have you. I’m not sure I’ll ever be truly comfy clipped in. Finally found T’s house though.

Young_Marxist_at_Tescos did think about a Crosslight. Part of me still thinks somethiing like a Surly frame with rigid forks and some fake Jones bars might do the trick. Needs a bit of thought. I know gravel bikes are the latest thing but I know loads of people who got one and don't ride anything else anymore.

The lad has a Ribble CGR and loves it. A high commendation given that he is a "rad dude" with a predilection for "sweet jumps and phat air"..........whatever that means.

I got back on the bike a few weeks ago, commuting to work 11 miles each direction. Took it easy for a couple of days and then started to try and quicken up - my knee started playing up again - feels like my lower leg and upper leg are compressing on each other and is very painful every step. Luckily it doesn't last too long but I think my cycling days are done. I might get an electric to try and eek out a few more years. I have put my name down for a 500quid Swytch pact that you use to adapt your own bike. Full price is a grand. I feel dirty but if I don't do this I think I'm done.

I rode up to one of those Your Speed Is cameras on a street yesterday and didn’t make any effort to hammer it.

Mate of mine recently dicked around in a ‘proper’ bike shop and greeted with indifference at Halfords. Happy to spend around £500 on a hybrid type bike, 10,12 speed, not looking for anything fancy, pottering about LS15.

Any thoughts or advice?

Been trying to help my mate out. He was looking for a hybrid but I’ve guided him towards what they are now calling gravel bikes. He’s after a size S frame. He’s not after entering the tour just wants a bike he can sling mudguards and a rack on and ride around LS15 and maybe head out further a field once in a while if the urge takes him. Thorner way maybe? There’s not much in stock at the low end price wise is there?

Jon There’s not much in stock of anything, anywhere. The Kinesis ^ came last week, as a substitute for a Giant I ordered last October.
