I read it three times but can only conclude that the piece more skewed in favor of Russia, as he states himself in the second last paragraph. He chastises the west for abandoning Ukraine but overlooks Putin's threat of nuclear retaliation, possibly because he, like us all. doesn't have an answer to that. He alludes to Putin's aim of subjugating Ukraine as something he might give up for less if he gets the east of Ukraine and Crimea. Well, he has that, more or less and it hasn't stopped him. He seems to think that Russia might allow Ukraine to keep an army if they gave up their missiles and overlooks that Ukraine already gave up all their nuclear arsenal: any missiles that they may have apart from those wouldn't impress Putin much. He will insist on disarmament.
The Guardian continues, rightly, to give space to competing ideas and I think this is an example of just that but I wasn't left feeling that I had heard from someone of like mind.

The US and EU should impose any and all sanctions it can on Russian. They should do the same to those countries that refuse to do the same.

Yes, you're right. I don't know if you are a Private Eye reader but the news section from the latest edition concentrates on sanctions and if they will work. It focuses on banks and shell companies and big accountancy firms and it's conclusion is depressing. The EU has been quite quick to impose the sanctions it can but the UK government has been dragging it's feet at the timing of the implementation which will allow the big beasts to move all their assets. It's the only game in town but it needs to be hammered home or Putin will ride it out.
Just re read this and I forgot to mention indeed that countries are still fulfilling orders on Russian oil. Hopefully, not for much longer.

Pro Russian trolls are beginning to reappear on twitter after their holiday. It's amazing how much negativity disappeared when Russia blocked twitter. Most of the Brexit argument shutdown. The Terf Wars went quite as no one gave a fuck what bathroom people used. And all the anti-woman stuff from "Rangers" fans completely disappeared. So either there's a gammon festival somewhere or the misogyny was all Putin's work. I didn't see a single antivax meme on facebook.

This thread covers an apparantly leaked memo from a Russian FSB member - possibly to be taken with a pinch of salt as Russia has "leaked" things like this before, but it's difficult to see what they'd gain by showing how weak their hand is at this point.

But, it does raise the points that Ukraine isn't just the only Russian "front" at the moment. They are scrabbling to keep hold of Syria/Assad and their "ally" Kaydirov may have problems of his own soon.

Watched the BBC news and Boris Johnson defending the delay in cancelling oil and gas imports from Russia. So that's it. The west has reached it's limits of chastising Putin for his murder of innocent people because we feel we've done what we can in defense of freedom. Our democratic 'leaders' are not very good at war. Worse than that, they're lousy poker players. That little shit is now convinced that he can kill as many people in Ukraine as he feels like killing and the west will sit there bleating about all they could do when old women are being left lying on the ground as others flee because there's no help and the fucking Russian heathens dump bombs on her.
NATO needs to launch a no-fly zone. Call the little killer's bluff. If he is nuts, we all die. But we die free.

Not sure I want to close airspace just yet, the risks are too high. It won’t happen anyway I don’t think. Tell China that is our intention, lets see quickly they get on the phone to him.

I'm off to Gran Canaria a week on Saturday. That's 2,400 miles away. Kiev is 1,700. Brings it home does that.

The only way to stop this is with economic sanctions firstly on Russia and then on China who will keep out of it (on paper anyway). And freeze the assets of all the Russian billionaires as well. That will piss a lot of powerful folk off who may, collectively, begin to gang up on Putin. Money talks.

Yes i know that petrol will go way above £2 per litre, gas/electricity keep on soaring (unless this hapless government makes more prices caps), inflation balloons and if China comes into the equation there will be a shortage of stuff like white goods but maybe that is the price we all have to pay rather than physical war.

Zelensky is addressing parliament today via video he will ask for a no fly zone over Ukraine, NATO won't sanction that though, they don't want to be shooting down Russian planes and thus bringing themselves into a war with Russia. A no fly zone would work against Ukraine as well though as they are using air strikes to bomb Russian military
