They've been getting supplies sorted for the huge numbers fleeing the war. They have British passports but she ended her message with 'we're just scared that we might be next'.

Jon Very true, their assesment is based on how poorly thought out and executed the invasion has been. Basically they reckon that Putin has made a massive error and over committed.

Boom! This rhymes with a number of Russia watchers here in the West. Depressing because it means there is actually no immediate end to the war. I'm still trying to understand what the deal is with with all these cease fires (if you can call them that). Since when has Putin given a shit about civilians? It could mean he's going to flatten the cities he has almost encircled (including Kyiv) or it could be the Ukrainians are right about decent and indiscipline in the army and he needs time to sort it out. Furthermore, he's lost two important commanders so it may be a time buyer to get the right guys into the vacancies.

Sanctions will work if we stop buying his oil and gas (he may even stop the flow himself by the threats yesterday). It would send the global economy into a tailspin of course and you wouldn't be able to fill up your car for a while, but that's the price of freedom. As long as we keep buying his products, the longer this goes on.
