My favourite Gorillaz song is Kids with Guns. That sounded ace on Saturday. I like this song because it reminds me of a time when I took the daughter to a scouts event where they were doing loads of different activities. They were short on leaders and I got asked if I could supervise their lot (about 12 of them). I said "Yeah no problem, what's the first activity?" It was air rifle shooting. Then on the way to the rifle range they all piled into the Tuck shop and bought loads of sweets and fizzy drinks. I thought, "Oh fucking great, they're all off their heads on sugar now to boot, what could possibly go wrong?" So every time I hear Kids with Guns I think of that.
Some of the new songs off the Mountain sounded good. Particularly "Orange County" and the one with that scruff from IDLES, "Art of Lying". Other stand outs were Feel Good Inc, and of course Dirty Harry and Clint Eastwood. A lot of the songs had a nice soul feel to them as well with the backing singers and that. I'm not a massive fan of Albarn but I think he can have a touch of the Ray Davies about him at times with some of his melodies. Orange County has this. A lovely melody that your milkman could whistle and indeed, loads of people were whistling it on the walk back into the city centre from the venue. Nice venue, Coop Live, first time ive been. Everything is well organised. Sound quality was good. I like the mini coop shops inside for those who can't be arsed queing at the bar. The lad told me he had seen "an interesting Japanese can of pop" and was gonna try it. I watched him then take a can of Asahi to the self check out, read the message that popped up saying he needed authorisation that he was 18, then realise it was beer and swop it for a can of Pepsi. Bless him. I'm so relived and happy he is nothing like I was at 14. I'm glad I chose to get the train in then walk from Piccadilly station to avoid the traffic. Took about 30 mins steady walk. Would do that again.
