Monday - The The @ Manchester Apollo

I went to see babybird last night at the Hare and Hounds in the big town.

I've seen babybird countless times. He was good value as ever. A different set list and played a fair few songs he's never played live plus some of his post studio bandcamp stuff output which was cool.

However babybird have and will always be a classic four piece. Last night, and for this short run of gigs he is on, they are a three piece.

So in essence karoke with a live guitarist.

Made me think. It must be an absolute doodle to go on tour - bloke with a laptop, bloke with a guitar and plug into PA at venue - bosh.

It was not a 100% success - I felt the older stuff was tinny and needed the full band sound but more recent stuff it worked well with the EDM influence in the background of a few songs.

Anyway - the future of live music?

Anchor Surely if its tinny the mixing or reproduction equipment was shite, rather than there not being a full band? The Jam for example were a 3 piece and they couldn't half knock out a racket. There's only two Sleaford Mods and they invariably sound superb live.

Djpekingman Tinny the wrong word - more the songs need a full wall of sound a decent rhythm section adds. I'm talking Guitar, bass, drums and vocal.

The more recent stuff he's done has been made electronically with a live guitar, It suits them - the older stuff written for a full band.

if you get my drift.

The jam as a three piece were a full band, Nirvanna as a three piece a full band.

I see the Flaming Lips are touring the Yoshimi album next May. Interesting. I saw them do the Soft Bulletin a few years back and for the first time out of the many gigs I've seen them they started to seem a bit trite and annoying when they weren't playing the songs with all the bits added like the yabbering in between songs and him fucking about in the crowd on a pretend unicorn and in a giant inflatable 'hamster ball' etc. The songs sounded mint mind. Maybe I'm getting old. I used to see them as fantastic live and a complete celebration of being an alive human but "the whole show" seemed to be wearing a bit thin. Still might go to this though. Yoshimi is a beautiful album.

fuzzy I like it. Henderson turned me onto it. A lot of his stuff is hit and miss but when he hits.

Squeeze are a strange one. I know the words to loads of their singles but I’m not really a fan.
