Jon At around 3.00pm on the 12th August 1989, I was sat in the car park of Morrisons at Five Lane Ends in Bradford, and that song came on the radio. Any hearing of that song takes me back to that spot and that time. Where I can, I quickly turn it off or skip it.
My then girlfriend was inside Morrisons, getting milk and I'm not sure whatever else, whilst I waited for her. Ten minutes away, on a makeshift bed in a small front room, my Mum was dying in front of her family aged 62, ravaged by cancer. I was 23 years old. We nipped to Morrisons to try and feel useful in a room filled with sons, daughters and their children, all watching the rising and falling of her chest, as the breaths got wider and wider apart.
We drove home in silence, went through the back door and placed the shopping on the kitchen counter. At 3.18pm she opened her eyes, scanned the room and took her last breath.
That's a powerful song to me. A song and a band that I never liked. I can't live, with, or without you, was laser sharp to me. Hating to see her in that state, needing her to find peace, and missing her forever more.
