Beryl has wiped out huge swathes of where we were earlier this year. Its difficult to comprehend just how disastrous this has been for the islands of Carriacou and Union.
The satellite pics I've seen show the house we stayed in in Argyll in Carriacou wiped off the map along with most buildings around it - the newly built laundrette next door seems to have survived. The two main towns on Union, Ashton and Clifton, still reeling from the Covid hit are just piles of broken building materials and furniture. Given that most of the buildings in this area were poor to say the least it looks like they're going to have to start from scratch. Absolute devastation.
While the focus has been on these two islands along with Petit Martinique and Petit St Vincent, neighbouring islands such as Canouan (the poor half) and Mayreau must have been similarly flattened. Even Mustique must have had a kicking, although most of the stuff on there is probably built to survive nuclear attack. Bequia and St Vinnie itself must have been blown about a bit - Blackie's Sky bar on Bequia is now probably a beach bar.
Poor sods. First the financial shit, then a couple of storms, then Covid and now this - I'm not sure if they'll ever recover.
