Given that tatties were introduced to europe from South America by the Spanish it would make sense that chips did not appear until the 16th century. I'm pretty sure that Columbus landed in 1492 in the Bahamas (far away from any chip sources) and returning to Spain in 1493 tatties were not the first thing on his mind. Pescado frito (fried fish in batter) has long been a dish in Spain and Portugal it would make sense that the dish was indeed invented on the Iberian peninsula - but not in the 15th century.
An alternative view is that vikings landed in the americas some 500 years earlier and returned with tatties sourced from native americans before they raped and pillaged them. From vikingland its just a short hop to Brid so Yorkshire could well be the originator of Fish n chips.
