Yeah, know what you mean. I was never into Linn, until I heard one.
Every part of their turntable is upgradeable and once you get past the fan boys and the mystique, it does play records like nothing else I've experienced. Not the best turntables in the world, but possibly one of the most iconic pieces of hi-fi ever.
I had a black ash one, didn't pay for it, but swapped another turntable plus other bits to a nice chap on a hi-fi forum I dip in and out of. He came and set it up for me, and then when I bought that STR4TA album, which spins at 45rpm and not 33rpm, he sold me a circuit board that could solve that. Then I asked him about the fluted chassis and he said he had one.
£500 later I had a big vinyl weekend and it sounded great. So I started thinking about other enhancements and he suggested a new power supply and the order was put in and an appointment was fixed. Then I started thinking about the bearing and a Xmas bonus and a 10% off voucher put it in reach. Appointment cancelled and rescheduled. He's coming tomorrow to take it away and fit these new parts.
The next upgrade path is the sub-chassis, top-plate, tonearm and cartridge. But that's crazy money.
He regularly sells well put together vintage ones from £1K to £2k. He's just sold this one for £4.5K. That 'block' on the side is the power supply I've just bought.
