I'm watching several big-budget shows at the moment. In order of preference:
Shogun: Fantastic. Swordplay, battles, political intrigue, extreme cruelty, culture clashes, a bit of sex. The overall design, costumes and sets are fantastic, too. Can't recommend this enough
Masters of the Air. Band of Brothers for bomber crews. Old-fashioned tale of Yank heroes involved in derring-do. Lots of raids, aerial battles, shot-down pilots on the run, POW camps, Brits are caricatures: almost upper-class and spiteful. I'm surprised how gripping I've found it.
Tokyo Vice (Season 2 just out). Cops, ace reporters and hostess bar owners against/with the Yakuza in turn of the millennium Tokyo. Quite engrossing storylines that are better than the performances. The two western leads, the reporter bloke especially, are a bit annoying and an array of Japanese acting talent including Rinko Kikuchi and Ken Watanabe, can be painful when they have to perform scenes in English. But the wizened Yak head honcho is fantastic and his young lieutenant on the make is pretty cool too.
3 Body Problem. Big-budget Sci-Fi from Game of Thrones makers, just out in the last few days. I read the first novel in the series during lockdown and it was properly crap, despite the fun slow-scale alien invasion premise. Thought I'd give the show a go and after 2 episodes I'm not sure whether I'll watch further. Sorry to say, but the young geniuses in astronomy and particle physics (and crisps), who are all mates and are being driven by mysterious extra-terrestrial forces towards suicide, seem to have been chosen foremost to tick the same kind of diverse-but-shiny-middle class boxes that you see in bog-standard telly ads. Cultural revolution and its aftermath scenes good, rest poor.
