It was basically a female-led reworking of the first one, including the ‘is it supernatural or not?’ sub-theme, but lacking the mood, tension, chemistry and style of the original. Nick Pizzolatto, the creator of the series wasn’t involved and got a lot of flack when he posted on social media that he thought it was tokenistic. It wasn’t a total disaster but with a tighter story and direction it could have been miles better.
If you’re looking for something dark, skewed, Incredibly tense then the last season of Fargo, which aired around the same time. completely knocks True Detective 4 out of the water.
