Well... if you were designing a music playback today, you wouldn't use vinyl and turntables.
The 'turn' in turntable is all about getting the motor to spin the platter at either 33 1/3rpm or 45 rpm.
Two ways to do that:
1) with a belt on a pulley, turned by a motor, or
2) without a belt, but just a motor
The SL1200 has the strobe that shows you you have hit the correct speed.
My Linn has a sensor that changes a flickering LED to a solid light when the correct speed has been achieved, usually takes a couple of spins.
