Just finished City In Ruins by Don Winslow. An easy read but disappointingly underwhelming. I remember feeling the same way about Michael Connelly a few years ago. This felt like Don spent so much time attacking Trump and Republicans on Twitter that, when he realised he owed his publishers a book, he knocked out this. Cliched characters and an obvious, done before plot line. There are much better books out there. Shame.

Travis_Bickle That’s the third of the “Danny Ryan trilogy” isn’t it? I enjoyed them, easy reading, but a bit undercooked. I’m a big fan of George Pelecanos and Winslow doesn’t come anywhere close to that standard when writing about crime and the shady side of America.

@AndreWeimaraner If it is shady America and hard boiled shocking crime Jim Thompson is your man. Pop. 1280 and The Killer inside are incredible books. Wrote The Grifters also. He creates great characters with these ticks and peccadillos and then the characters who are just evil. Keeeeeeeeeeeeeeerect!

Finally reading Galveston having bought it about a decade ago. One I kept looking at on the shelves and thinking I'd read it. And I hadn't. Brilliant book.
Pelecanos is great. I think James Lee Burke is a genius. Ellroy too.

Anchor Payback press used to whack out loads and they're ace. Writers like Iceberg Slim and Chester Himes. If you can stay hip with the groove man...

The road. Christopher Hadley.

Not the post apocalyptic one, but the traces of a Roman one in anglia. Really good. Basically him walking & tracing the road through what’s left and what he can find regards the local Roman history. Using it as a metaphor about existing.

I liked it. An nice easy read

Just finished this - third time round. Felt new and fresh as it did the first time. Cracking book - easily one of his best - the whole letter to the BBC has me cracking up every time. One of the funniest things i've read in a book.

The violence to dogs is at the fore here as well.

I n fact child two found a letter he wrote to the Scotsman about dugs. I'll post it.
