Anchor Thanks for the recomendation - i've just bought that Grits and also I got this. Kelly + Victor looks really good as well however Sheepshagger looks very much like Child of God by Mcarthy - not necessarily a bad thing.
Kevin_Stapleton I enjoyed Sheepshagger but never got round to Grits; I’ll add it to the list. Is wreckage the one about the scouse gangsters in north Wales?
Rudi Kevin_Stapleton Wreckage is the follow up to Stump - so maybe read Stump first. For my money, Niall is the best writer currently operating in the UK
Bod Harvest Grow it over winter, the frost does it good, they should be ready for next spring. Growing the supermarket stuff might not work, might not survive the winter weather
Bod Jon I know you can grow certain carrots through autumn and the beginning of winter, the same for winter cabbages, swede, and Brussels all of which i,m trying. Not sure if you can grow anything over winter unless you use covers, cloches etc.
Jon Bod There’s a lot to learn. I’m not in a rush, got loads to do, it’s a real mess out there, but raised beds are a medium to long term goal. It was something for me and the youngest to do, she’s taking a gap year before college and she’s into all that environmental stuff so it seemed viable. The wife’s starting to get interested in it too. We still get on so that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Thanks for the info.
doggybag Casanova by Ian Kelly. I hadn't realized he was such a brainy bugger; he passed the bar at 16. He spoke fluent Latin by the time he was 12. He worked with Mozart on his operas performed in Venice; Mozart people! His failing was he got cunt struck. I sympathize. Still, he got more pussy than I ever did.
Mike_Jones Just finished The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, written from the perspective of a 15 year old lad with Asperger's. Really interesting and very moving, gives you some insight into how a mind on the spectrum works, and the difficulties they and their families face. Sounds heavy but it's really uplifting. Great writer. Mark Haddon that is.
Flaneur Mike_Jones One of the best books I've ever read that. Saw the stage show of it in Manchester too. Very good how they pulled that off.
Anchor Mike_Jones Flaneur Yeah. Cracking read. I use it in lessons. Love how straight down the line he is. The humour as dry as a bone. Then desperately sad and lonely. Great story telling. I saw the stage show off Broadway. Got rush tickets. It was fucking ace. A spot of bother by Haddon is also good. The Red house less so.
CharlieG Beautifully written, informed and insightful. I'd not appreciated how much good stuff came out in the space of these twelve months.
Kevin_Stapleton CharlieG He writes really well. Loved the chapter on Rod Stewart. Any of his books are worth a read.
cordshoes CharlieG Might have a look at that. My current favourite personal playlist is titled 70-75, cause there was so much variety in that few years,
