Cooley you're hitting quite a few classics lately

Bod Sure am. I got bored of the shitty crime novels and half-arsed biographies I’d been reading, so decided to spread me wings a bit. After being sniffy about ‘classics’ for years I’m surprised as to how much I’m enjoying - and understanding - them (although I think I’ll give Ulysses a swerve).

Cooley I read the Portrait of the Artist as a Young man on my degree course - the lecturers wanted Ulysess but everyone kicked right off!

Stream of conscious thought is really hard - I recently read How late it was how late - really hard.

Anchor Reading a book you fail to grasp seems futile to me. Reading is, after all, for pleasure. People just like to say they’ve read War and Peace/Ulysses/Shakespeare’s Complete Works, for example. I doubt the vast majority understand/enjoy them.

Cooley Read a few ‘classics’ that nearly had me reaching for the Beano…Wuthering Heights, On The Road, Moby Dick, Great Gatsby, Portrait of the Artist… didn’t enjoy any of them. Don’t like not finishing a book though.

Agree entirely. I just abandon them now - never used to. Not many worse than ploughing through something you dislike. Donna tart for example.

I understood the kelman book but it was just hard going as It needed to be read in one sitting but I did not have a spare eight hours at that point.

Young_Marxist_at_Tescos Maybe reconsider your choices. Mobs Dick’s meant to be very dense in places. I don’t fancy Wuthering Heights or Gatsby either. I’ve also read On The Road. Fucking rubbish. Have another crack, maybe?

I enjoyed Moby Dick. It moves slowly but doesn’t feel like a chore to read. I’m not sure I got all the symbolism or the stuff they say it’s really about mind.

Read an essay o E of my kids did on Gatsby and the symbolism of the light at the end of the pier. I always thought it was there so no one sailed into it at night.

I struggle with all of that. Like Animal Farm. If you want to write about communism write about it, leave the farm to James Herriot.

Our Man In Havana is probably my favourite classic.

First World War about the Somme Campaign ,very descriptive and pulls no punches in describing how our lads endured the horrendous conditions ,witnessing huge loss of life in those ire filled trenches.
didnt know that half the British Force were Teritorials.

I enjoyed the first chapter of Moby Dick. After that it was a determined slog to get to the end. I didn't feel any better just relieved.
A bit like going jogging with Mrs MAC.
Our Man in Havana is an excellent piece of work and my favourite of Greene's books.
